Intumescent epoxy casings are aesthetically pleasing mouldable casings for protecting steel columns or beams.

The epoxy medium carries the intumescent components, the chemicals which undergo the reactions to form the fire protective barrier.

At a certain temperature, the intumescent agents react to release gases. At the same time, the rigid epoxy matrix begins to break down and the material softens under heat stress. This allows the gas to expand, along with the epoxy, thereby increasing the thickness of the material surrounding the steel. The remaining chemicals then recombine and solidify, encapsulating the gas bubbles in a thick, low density char. This thick layer of insulating char prevents a large proportion of the heat from reaching the steel.
